Hole punch cloud is the nickname for a cloud type classified as cavum. They form when a layer of middle or high-level clouds like altocumulus or cirrocumulus made of supercooled water droplets, develops a hole partially filled with ice crystals known as fall streaks. Hole punch clouds can happen naturally, but also more frequently in high-traffic aircraft corridors when airplanes upset the balance of the clouds. When the hole is stretched out, or in lines, they are also called ice canals.
