Hurricane Frederic was a benchmark storm in 1979, striking Dauphin Island and Mobile Alabama as the strongest storm in a half century. It was also one of the most expensive hurricanes to strike the United States up to that point. Loss of life was minimal but impact and destruction was extreme.
