Heat lightning is a misnomer, or misleading name, for frequent lightning that happens in the distance, on a warm night, sometimes when the sky overhead is clear. It is regular lightning from regular thunderstorms that are too far away for you to be able to hear the thunder. Where those storms are, there is the sound of thunder, with the threats of lightning.
