$It’s a Halo, not a Rainbow, Around the Sun! If you ever see a ring around the sun or moon that looks like a rainbow, its not! A rainbow only happens when its raining in the direction of your shadow, with the sun on the other side of you. What you see around the sun or moon is a halo. Its a cousin of a rainbow, caused by refraction and reflection and it could be seen anywhere on Earth, any time of the year, as long as you have a veil of cirrus clouds.
