In this Subnautica 2 guide, I’ll show you where to find the hidden mass grave in the Hot Caves area, one of the creepiest story locations currently in the game.
This is the same area where you need to recover black boxes from several missing colonists, including one black box that gives you an important security clearance needed to continue the story. At first, it feels like you are just tracking down another set of colonist remains, but if you pay attention to the environmental clues, the scene becomes much darker.
As you explore the Hot Caves, you can follow abandoned oxygen tanks scattered across the ground. These tanks lead toward the central volcanic vent in the middle of the room. If you keep following the trail, you eventually find the bodies of dead colonists fused into the rock, all crawling together toward the volcanic vent.
That raises the obvious question: why would the colonists crawl into the hottest part of the cave and basically cook themselves alive?
The answer seems tied to Masefield Syndrome and the alien virus infecting life on Protea. As the infection progresses, living creatures appear to be drawn toward the Tree. In some cases, that may mean swimming or moving directly toward the World Tree itself. In other areas, like the Hot Zone and Hot Caves, it may mean being drawn toward the Titan Rockbore roots hidden deep below the terrain.
That makes this mass grave even more disturbing. These colonists may not have simply gotten lost or run out of oxygen. They may have been infected, slowly losing control, and eventually drawn toward the volcanic vent and the root system beneath it. The abandoned oxygen tanks suggest they were still trying to survive, but by the end, they were all crawling in the same direction.
This location is a perfect example of Subnautica 2’s environmental storytelling. The game does not need to stop and explain everything with a giant warning sign. It just gives you the black boxes, the abandoned gear, the volcanic vent, and the bodies fused into the rock. Then it lets you realize what probably happened.
