Where is the story of Subnautica 2 heading next?
The current Early Access story leaves us with a massive number of unanswered questions about the Cicada, the missing colonists, the Proteavirus, and the mysterious World Tree looming in the distance.
In this video, I break down my current Subnautica 2 story theory and discuss two very different possibilities for what we may discover as the map and storyline continue to expand.
The first possibility is that more Cicada colonists are still alive.
We have only explored a portion of the colony ship’s scattered wreckage, and there could still be another sleep bay or major section of the Cicada hidden somewhere beyond the currently playable area. That wreckage could contain additional colonists who survived in suspended animation, functioning biobeds, or entirely new characters waiting to be discovered.
Finding a populated sleep bay would allow the story to introduce living colonists instead of only showing us what happened through abandoned habitats, damaged black boxes, and recorded messages.
However, there is another considerably stranger possibility.
The Proteavirus and Masefield syndrome appear to affect more than the physical biology of the planet. Several parts of the story suggest that infected or influenced colonists became increasingly obsessed with reaching the World Tree.
If some of those colonists survived, they may have spent years or even generations living beyond the known map while falling deeper under the Tree’s influence.
That could mean the player eventually discovers an isolated colony that has developed into some kind of World Tree cult. They may worship the ecosystem, deliberately infect themselves with local organisms, modify their bodies using Proteus DNA, or believe that humanity must become part of the planet instead of trying to escape it.
Basically, we could find normal survivors who need rescuing, or a village of aquatic lunatics who think turning into fish is the next stage of human evolution.
This is entirely a theory based on the story, environments, logs, and mysteries currently available in Subnautica 2 Early Access. Let me know where you think the story is heading and whether you expect to find survivors, enemies, mutated colonists, or something even stranger near the World Tree.
