A preview of the drums for the next iGenesis video, which will be the full 29 minute 'Duke' suite. This EXCERPT is the stunning Duke's Travels and Duke's End, which has had us drummers salivating for years - Phil's perfect drumming on the Duke studio version of this was and is just sublime.
Recording this was quite a task, I can tell you. Obviously, learning the part was technically challenging (understatement), but the bigger challenge was that iGenesis are working on re-creating the live version: which meant we were all recording using a live MP3 as backing. I took a decision early on that I wanted to record the studio version of the drum track, as for me, it was the definitive 'Travels' drumming.
This then meant I had to learn the studio version, and then make myself play it like that from memory whilst recording / playing along with the live version (does that make sense?) - the only way to ensure all iGenesis musicians would end up in synch. Quite a headache for me, and something of a leap of faith in places.
Anyway, I am pleased to say it worked out just swell! Hope you agree :-)
I'll upload the usual 'side-view' version as well if enough of you particularly wanted to see the bass drum pedal - let me know!
For the iGenesis video, rest assured that 'Chester' joins Phil for Duke's End. In addition, there is a short drum duet between 'Phil' and 'Chester' at the start of Travels :-)
I don't know how many of you have seen the drum cover of Travels / End I did on here a few years back - suffice to say, I seem to have improved about 5000% since then!!!
