Here we are at last! Me trying to get all the little bits and pieces of this great live track in the right places!
This one is one of the easier Genesis tracks to copy on the drums, I guess - the main problem with it is memorising the correct bar to play the correct fill, or the correct open hi-hat, or change in bass drum pattern, or snare/crash accent etc. I think I got most of it about right, but there are still things played at the wrong moment, or not played at all, or played wrong! Oh well!
I don't know if it is just me, but I find the little 'push' at 0'48 incredibly easy to miss - I always seem to try and play it a bar early or a bar late! Got it right on this take, but you did not see the four hundred and sixty other takes where I got it wrong!!!
The first half, with Phil singing, is relatively straightforward. I don't have the bass drum note for note by any means, nor did I catch the crash and china accents in all the right spots during the 'middle eight'.
The real fun obviously starts during the long instrumental section / outro. Again, I find it easy to miss the fills at 4'22, 4'32 and definately 4'55. It's maddening!
My footwork on hi-hat and bass drum is not as accurate as I usually manage in the bit from 5'21 to 5'33, which is a bummer. Really clever stuff by Phil (is Chester perhaps doing the bass drum, whilst Phil does the hi-hat pushes?) (I guess not). I really like that bit, but it is probably the most difficult moment of the song, and easy to mess up.
At 6'07 I had an out-of-body experience, and thought about the cat, or my kids or something, and so forgot to come out of the crash accent section properly. Pants.
From 6'23, the whole tom thing is actually very awkward. This is purely down to the fact that one of the drummers is hitting an open hi-hat amongst it all, and that just messes it all up for any of us stupid enough to try and copy the whole thing! Please do not tell me that Phil is playing it all by himself! It is really hard to get the same feel, in my view!
Trying to catch the snare/crash accents that Phil throws in at 7'03, 7'07 and 7'23 is really hard, especially the second set (assuming you are also playing what I take to be Chester's deep toms as well). I just about get them all I think.
Finally, at the bit after 7'55, I just could not hear the music, and so started to lose track of things! So this bit sounds absoultely awful. Sorry. In my defence, this also is very hard to copy as a single drummer, when it really needs the dynamics and power of two drummers.
All in all, this is about as close as I am gonna get it. Hope it is ok.
