This is a rough and ready raw mix of the fantastic drum sounds currently being created by VExpressions Ltd for the Mimic Pro.
(UPDATE 28th Dec - I have just learned via VEX that my recording here has lost some bottom end. This was caused by my use of an external audio interface and running into my Macbook Logic recording software. If I had used the Mimic's internal recorder, I would have captured an even more amazing sound than is presented here (I just tested this). I will do a further video soon, to demonstrate the difference).
VExpressions are busy modelling lots of different drum kits, using the on-board Steven Slate samples and the full potential of this incredible module by Pearl. This is one of four Pre-Release kits, which they have issued to about a dozen people at this stage (a group of us on vdrum forum who were rather keen!). The VEX project is on-going and the full release of perhaps 50 kits will not be until around February. These kits will ultimately be available for purchase from VEX.
The 4 kits we have so far from VEX are kits based on Bonham, Copeland, Hakim and Peart. There are many more to come. Copeland and Hakim fanatic that I am, the Bonham kit gives me goosebumps, and that's the one I keep playing!!!!
Please note that this particular VEX kit is NOT the finished product - they will continue to tweak the sounds right up until the final release.
As I think you will hear, this kit is based on the gorgeous Bonham drum sound. I think it is awesome. I have done nothing with it - this recording is straight out of the Master 1 and 2 outputs, and I have done zero post production. I turned the overheads up and the room mic up in the mixer, to give an even huger sound. Other than that, I did nothing. If I had recorded this with the Mimic's internal recorder feature, I would have got an even better sound on this recording (I only found out after uploading this video!).
I have been using the Mimic now for a couple of months, and it is mind blowing. I have used it live and my bandmates and me have been staggered at how good it sounds. This module is stunning. And with the VExpresions expansions, (and future Steven Slate samples) it will be even more stunning :) Not only that, but Pearl/Steven Slate are already busy improving and updating the firmware, with lots of great stuff to come........incredibly, we already have had several great firmware updates, and this module has not been out long.
For those of you who have the Mimic - I have firmware update v1.06hc38 installed - which I don't think is widely available yet. It is needed to run the VEX kits. I have been lucky enough to be in direct contact with the Mimic Software developer (a wonderful chap and incredibly helpful) and he has provided me with several beta updates :)
I wish Led Zep would let us do covers on YT. Let me tell you, when I play along to Fool In The Rain, with this drum sound, my grin stretches from one side of the room to the other. What a blast!!!
I realise my playing is sloppy here at times - but please just concentrate on the drum sounds. That's what this video is about....
Apologies for the audio being slightly out of synch - this is something which YT have done during upload :(
For those that want to know - the drum kit is a 7 pc Drum-Tec Pro Series. It's gorgeous to look at and gorgeous to play. I walked into Drum-Tec's shop in Germany and fell in love with it on the spot. Cymbals are CY14 and 15 from my TD20KX kit, which I had in 2010. Hats are VH13. Kick pedal is Sonor Perfect Balance. Rack is from my accoustic kit, it's an old Pearl rack from about 400 years ago....
