Here we have another drummer-only view of an iGenesis video. Once again, this is an excerpt from the full 30 minute 'Duke Suite', a video presented by iGenesis a month or so ago. This time, we have the wonderful 'Duchess'. I have also kept 'Guide Vocal' on, at the end of the video. Unfortunately, YouTube have slightly un-synched the second iGenesis portion of this video, after the overhead drum shot. Sorry! My original movie is fully synched!
This proved to be the surprise package for me, when I was working on the full suite. I thought all my efforts would be going into Duke's Travels and Behind The Lines. True, I spent ages on those - but this one - Duchess - is far more awkward than I had realised! I quickly worked out that unless I played all the crash and bass and snare accents exactly as Chester did, it sounded pants. Chester played this beautifully, and his intricate crash and snare work compliments the song perfectly.
So for me, the problem was getting it all memorised, and then getting it on camera. I think it worked out fine, and I have to say that this actually turned out to be my favourite part of the whole 30 minute recording :-)
The other thing about this part of the Suite, was that I could not actually record to a standard MP3 version of the original Genesis. Cyrus quickly realised that if I (and indeed the rest of the band) did that, then the timing would not precisely match his re-creation of the drum machine intro. So, he had to create a rough drum machine mix, add some rough vocals and some keyboard bits, and then I had to record to that. Let me tell you, it was in equal measure WEIRD and TOUGH! Drumming to what amounted to a click track with vague vocals and vague keys.......made this one hell of a challenge!
