Yes, this might be something of an obscure choice for a drum cover, but I happen to think it's pretty interesting on drums. It also happens to be, in my view, one of the greatest songs ever written. I just love those lyrics, and the vocals are just great on this classic Talking Heads track.
The drum part is just a fantastic, energetic groove. That tom thing just makes the whole song skip along, and then when you add in the snare off beat accent, the other ghost notes, the bass drum part -- it just kind of takes off. But the real beauty is in the cymbal work on top. It just sort of moves all around the rhythm, and if you do not keep concentrating, next thing, you miss the godamn tom note! This happens to me a couple of times in this cover, as I have like an out-of-body experience and start thinking about my mortgage, or the cat, or whatever the hell I was thinking!
It is a real challenge, I think, to try and keep adjusting the location of the splash and crash cymbals, without affecting the rest of the groove. Off beat splashes, double splash/crash hits, hits on the 1, hits on the 4, sometimes in the bar before the tom note, and sometimes in the bar after.......it's a real mind fuck, for me at least!
Brilliant song, brilliant lyrics, great drum part and a very good test of your mental drumming agility. That's my humble view, anyway!
