This is the second in a series of three videos showcasing the Pearl Mimic and the recently released VEX 'Origins' expansion pack.
I'm going to suggest that the combination of Pearl's Mimic Pro module; Drum-Tec's Pro Series kit; ATV's hats, ride and crashes, plus the VEX 'Origins' expansion, is 'the dream team'. From where I'm sitting, this all plays beautifully, and sounds stunning. I hope you feel the same :)
VExpressions have used the on-board sounds of the Mimic, and have spent considerable time modelling and creating a whole new bunch of kits. In fact, there are 50 in the Origins pack. I think they are all pretty amazing.
You could of course do all this modelling yourself. For my part, I am too stupid to be able to do this.
I have selected a total of 11 kits to demonstrate in these three videos. It was not easy to choose! In this video I have used:
1. 'Copeland' - That Stuart snare sound :)
2. 'Bubinga' - An astonishing sound. Might be my favourite....
3. 'Modern Ska' - some high tuned toms
4. 'Phillips' - A wonderful Simon Phillips sound
I got to say that the Bubinga kit is pretty much my favourite. The power of the kick and the gorgeous snare sound, just inspires me. They make for a really atmospheric feeling, which I hope I am conveying here for you. The dynamics of the whole Mimic / drum-tec / ATV / VEX Origins combination is just amazing......
I have a lot of fun with the Phillips kit too, as you can see. Don't ask me what the pattern is, and why I keep losing it - I'm improvising and making it all up as I go. Having said that, Simon Phillips fans may possibly recognise the pattern I am at least aiming at ;)
I have recorded the drums using the Mimic's on-board recorder, and then simply exported the WAV file to iMovie. There has been no post-production - this is the raw sound effectively straight out the Master Outs.
VEX provide with their 'Origins' instructions, suggested Mimic Mixer settings. It is important to use these if you want to get the kits sounding right. I was surprised by these settings, but it works!
The ATV cymbals are great. I love the big 18" ride and the 14" hats. And having 14" and 16" crashes is a real treat. They feel wonderful to play and they are much less harsh on the stick and wrist then the Roland's. The hi hat is fantastic. And the ride bell is actually sensitive and you don't have to use the shoulder of the stick.
I got my ATV cymbals from drum-tec. They came within only a week or so of placing the order - so if you are in Europe, they are a good bet!
My drum kit is Drum-Tec's Pro Series in white. It is a 7pc. And I totally love it.
