At 12:01 PM, the Xenia/Greene Central Communications Center conducted the monthly test of the emergency alert siren system for Greene County.
This month I was debating in between a couple of sirens (Cedarville and Jamestown) in my home county that had yet to be recorded. I decided to ultimately pass up the Xenia quarterly test in order to film this one in Cedarville. I was rather nervous the night before the test as I had not checked with the fire department (who also uses this siren as a fire siren) whether this siren is activated by the county. Much to my relief, however, on the first tone string from county dispatch the siren came to life.
This siren has been a potential target of mine for awhile now due to its unique mount. This siren is mounted on top of an 80 foot tall pole and is secured in place with guy wires. The pictures aren’t fooling you either: this siren really is as tall as the radio tower next to it. It is also an interesting siren because it uses the rather ancient 2001-AC controller that also has a UC Controller inside; however the FC is what the county uses to activate this siren, so the radio in the UC is likely disused.
I was not expecting this siren to rotate counterclockwise or sound for a little more than 3 minutes of alert, so that was also a bonus. The siren overall was not too loud but certainly loud enough to alert the Village and nearby Cedarville University of a tornado event. I believe this siren was installed in the early 1990s. The "whooshing" noise heard in the video is a waterfall which is located at a creek right next to the station.
This siren is located at the Cedarville Township Volunteer Fire Department off of South St. in Cedarville. I also was surprised that the T-121 at Central State University went off for the test (I also was not sure who had activated this one prior), so look for the audio recording of that siren in another video. Enjoy!
Greene County tests sirens on the First Monday of every month at 12:00 noon, permitting there is no severe weather in the area.
