On February 15, 2024. Deputies from the Adams County Sheriff’s Officer were dispatched to a residence for the report of an assault with a knife. When deputies arrived, they met with the victim (Edward), and observed that his white t-shirt was covered in blood. Edward stated his neck was sliced with a knife by his housemate Michael, and that he had fled from the residence in a white van.
The laceration on Edwards neck was no longer actively bleeding and a deputy began checking him for other injuries. As he lifted up Edward's shirt, the deputy observed multiple stab wounds to his rib cage, and a stab wound in his right arm pit. EMS arrived and transported Edward via med flight to a hospital where he was treated for his injuries.
It was later discovered that when Michael sliced Edward in the neck, the knife missed his carotid artery by approximately 1/2 inch. The length of the laceration was approximately four inches in length extending from just under his chin to the midway point of his neck on the right side. Michael also stabbed Edward approximately two times in the torso, causing puncture wounds to his ribcage area and one puncture to his armpit area. Edward's girlfriend (Michael's aunt) also had her right thumb cut by Michael during the altercation.
Shortly later, a deputy observed a van similar to Michael parked outside of a residence. As the deputy was parked outside, a male walked out of the residence and waved him over. The male, later identified as Corey, stated that Michael was inside of the residence, and called for him to come outside. Michael walked out on the porch and the deputy asked if he had any injuries. He explained that his ribs hurt and mentioned that they were possibly broken. Michael said he had been drinking at his residence when Edward got mad and started yelling at him. Michael then stated that Edward “came at me, and we got into it”. When asked how much he had to drink, Michael said he had consumed approximately 3-4 cans of beer. Michael said he lives at the residence with Edward and his aunt (Gail).
There appeared to be dried blood on Michael's hands, arms, and face. The deputy asked if it was his blood or someone else's. Michael stated it was his and that he had accidentally stabbed himself while he was at work. Deputies then searched Michael and placed him in handcuffs before securing him in a squad car. A deputy then spoke with Corey, who said Michael had arrived at his residence approximately ten minutes prior. Corey said he let Michael inside then received a phone call from a relative about the incident. Corey said he told Michel that he needed to turn himself in and that deputies arrived shortly later.
Michael was then transported to the hospital for a blood draw and to get medically cleared. The blood results later revealed that Michael had a .178 BAC. Edward sustained non-fatal injuries and was provided medical attention. Michael was found guilty for 1st-degree recklessly endangering safety, causing injury by negligent use of a weapon, and operating with a prohibited alcohol concentration (3rd offense). He was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison and ordered to pay $2880 in fines.
