On April 10, 2025. Officers from the New Richmond Police Department were informed by the St. Croix County Dispatch Center that a female subject (Cassey) had just stolen a black Hummer. While patrolling the area, an officer observed the Hummer abandoned on the side of the road and asked the owner to come to the scene. The owner explained that he saw Cassey in the driver’s seat and that she appeared to be impaired. Cassey was described as a “nasty looking” white female with messed up teeth wearing a brown jacket. He also mentioned that there were two checkbooks missing from the vehicle.
While searching for the subject, an officer went to a nearby housing shelter and asked the staff if any potentially intoxicated females had recently returned wearing a brown jacket. Staff members then mentioned that a female named Cassey had just returned with a key fob hanging from the front of her pants and provided a PBT which showed a 0.15 BAC. Officers then spotted Cassey in the hallway and began questioning her. Cassey denied operating any motor vehicles and denied having any keys to the Hummer. Officers were able to review surveillance footage which showed the suspect wearing the same clothing as Cassey.
The housing shelter staff explained that Cassey was upset that she was no longer allowed to stay there and that she was no longer allowed to stay in a room. Staff stated that Cassey had already packed her personal items and was escorted out of the room and gave officers permission to search the bedroom that she had occupied. The keys were not found and no other items of evidentiary value were located.
While speaking with Cassey, officers documented that she was unsteady on her feet, there was a strong odor of intoxicants coming from her person, she had glassy eyes, and slurred speech. Cassey stated that she purchased alcohol at a liquor store and admitted to having a beer but continued to deny that she stole or drove the Hummer. She also denied having any keys and allowed officers to search her belongings. No keys were located and Cassey refused to provide a PBT for law enforcement . She was then secured in handcuffs and placed into a squad car. Cassey also refused a blood draw but was transported to the hospital after officers got a warrant signed by a judge.
Cassey initially stated that she was not going to submit to a blood draw but allowed a nurse to take a blood sample. While the nurse was finishing up, an officer observed Cassey slip something under the bed sheet. Cassey was then asked to stand up and was secured in handcuffs. An officer walked over to the bed and lifted the sheet to find a key and key fob for a Hummer H2. The keys had a wet substance on them so officers used gloves to secure them into a biological bag and eventually turned them over to the vehicle's owner. The owner later reported to law enforcement that the two checkbooks were actually located at his residence and were not stolen by Cassey. The blood draw later revealed that Cassey had a .140 blood alcohol content.
Cassey was secured into a squad car and transported to the St. Croix County Jail where she was released to jail staff. She was found guilty for Taking or Driving a Vehicle Without the Owners Consent and OWI (3rd). Cassey was sentenced to 9 months in jail and 1 year of probation.
