On February 20, 2025. An officer from the Chetek Police Department observed a black Dodge pick up truck fail to stop at a stop sign. As the officer got behind the truck, he noticed that it also did not have a license plate displayed. The officer activated his emergency light and the truck ran another stop sign and continued for about 4 blocks before stopping.
Officers made contact with the driver who was later identified by his booking photos as Nathan. Nathan and his passenger (Dylan) were informed on the reason for the traffic stop and asked to provide identification. Dylan provided his drivers license but Nathan began to become argumentative. He eventually told officers that his name was "Nate" but refused to provide his ID. While speaking with Nathan, officers could smell the strong odor of intoxicating beverages. They also noted that he had glossy bloodshot eyes and spoke with slurred speech.
Dylan appeared to be highly intoxicated and was struggling to keep his head raised. Nathan then became upset about the officers flashlight and was ordered to exit the vehicle. He refused and mentioned that he has had a bad past with police officers. As officers continued to order Nathan out of the vehicle, he put it in drive and began fleeing. Nathan was driving at approximately 60 MPH in a posted 25 MPH zone and failed to stop at multiple stop signs. Officers decided to terminate the pursuit due to the reckless driving and dangerous speeds on slippery roads.
The passenger Dylan later came into the police department to request his driver's license that was left at a traffic stop earlier in the day. Dylan stated he was heavily intoxicated and that his friend Nathan fled from police. Nathan was later arrested and charged with Vehicle Operator Flee or Elude an Officer, 2nd-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety, Resisting or Obstructing an Officer, OWI (4th), Felony Bail Jumping, and Operating While Revoked. A jury trial found Nathan guilty on all charges and he was sentenced to 10 years in prison, 20 months in jail, 12 years of probation, and 10 years extended supervision.
