"Roses (feat. Roc Marci)" by DJ Muggs & Eto

It’s really hard to write on Eto since he’s an underground rapper in a genre long forgotten, but one that is steadily rising to the top again like a ravioli (quality-wise). The grimy East Coast NY rap that was pioneered by Mobb Deep and Wu-Tang clan has been having a revival of sorts. It also happens to be a sound that I frequently gravitate to, even though I’m not hard and softer than brioche bread. DJ Muggs on the other hand is the producer for Cypress Hill, so he’s a damn legend.
Muggs has been on a tear as of late, producing albums for a bevy of talented NY rappers. He started with two projects for Meyhem Lauren, then a full length LP with my favorite rapper of today Roc Marciano, then a project for Eto, and recently one for Mach Hommy (whose hype I still don’t understand). Eto is a talented wordsmith and his street raps pack both emotion and wordplay, so I understand why Muggs connected with him.
“Roses” was the obvious standout to me on Muggs & Eto’s LP, Hell’s Roof. The production is very simple, but also haunting. Constructed around some eerie piano keys and standard hip-hop drums, this beat was begging to get laced. Luckily, Roc Marciano opens up the track with a typically savage verse, and Eto picks up the baton and runs with it. Listening to this track will transport you to the streets, which might be a place you don’t want to go. If it is, dive right in.
