I know this is a music blog and you came here to escape the news and all the headlines that paint a demoralizing but accurate picture of the state of the world we’re living in. BUT, I have to take just one post to address the obvious -- life is bad right now. Well, let me clarify -- I don’t mean my personal life. My day-to-day struggles, which involve trying to avoid looking at a screen before bed and remembering to call my mom, are luxuries compared to the realities of those who are fighting the system every day to be recognized as human.
I can hear you now -- “Well, what are you doing about it then?” This is probably about 50% self-defense and 50% what I actually believe (an oxymoron?), but I think this question is a dangerous one. It’s a slippery slope into hopelessness and defeat because it implies that we all need to be doing something, and that something needs to be big, something like discovering the next renewable energy source or eliminating widespread xenophobia. I apologize if this is turning into a lecture, but I think it’s important to remind ourselves that all the problems in the world today can be traced back to a simple lack of understanding, and when framed like that I think it makes possible solutions a little more tangible. Solutions like -- you guessed it -- music.
Music has this incredibly powerful ability to bring people together that, in a world of fear, hatred, and borders, might otherwise be difficult to achieve. To me, Kazy Lambist’s collaboration with Angolan-born, Portugese-raised singer Pongo on “Work” is a beautiful example of this. How a song that fuses various musical influences can avoid appropriation and create an environment for exposure and exploration into other cultures, as well as a space for personal healing and catharsis. Pongo energizes the French producer’s cool composition with some Kuduro style, characterized by danceable rhythms that fuse Coca and Zouk with African percussion as well as lyrics generally sung in Portuguese. While perhaps a new and exciting sound to the Western ear, for Angolans Kuduro is not just music but history captured in sonic form. Its origins are intertwined with a story of political turmoil, civil unrest, and an undying hope through it all. So if you like what you hear and you find yourself curious, go to Wikipedia and take some time to educate yourself -- help make the world a better place.
