“Walk It Out (feat. Georgia Anne Muldrow)" by Tensei
Curated by: Mike Floeck
Spotify: bit.ly/WalkItOutTensei
Genre: #soul
Cymbals clang and clatter, a lingering upright bass and a friendly horn section begin to creep through the blinds like early morning sunlight and suddenly, it’s bliss: everything’s gonna be okay.
Chris Kramer and Midas Wells, based in Chicago, form the spirited duo Tensei, creating luridly psychedelic arrangements often accompanied by jazz vocalists or R&B experimenters. For their new collaborative single, Tensei and LA-based musician Georgia Anne Muldrow build slow, syrupy tension with a light and airy instrumental topped off with warbly synth blurbs and melancholic horns. Muldrow is a masterful melodist, letting her voice pour out of her and fill in all the porous spaces in Tensei’s production like water rushing over a dry riverbed - the effect is much like being directly under a disco ball and spinning in the opposite direction: now the ball is spinning twice as fast and you’re slowly losing control and being taken over, but you really, really like it.
Muldrow here is aiming to bring the listener to the light. Got a bad thought? Walk it out, get rid of it. Don’t let it overcome you. She casts her net wide, appealing to cinics, to hopeless romantics and to the clinically depressed, but what results is less of a feel-good jam or an exercise in finger-shaking and more of an evolving exploration of the feeling of overcoming a negative. It’s a magical little slice of music that just makes you want to get back under that disco ball and spin, then walk it out.
