To the unfamiliar ear, you might at first think you’re listening to some five-star hotel elevator music. A little baseball organ diddy intro that’s pleasing, but you’re still distracted by the thought of how many more floors you have to go up. Then, a smooth saxophone line sneaks in. Your attention starts to focus and you think to yourself, “this is some damn good Muzak”. Finally, after about ten more floors of more-or-less passive listening, that funky, funky bassline drops. You’re no longer in an elevator, but in the magical, multidimensional macrocosm of French Kiwi Juice.
For any fan, to hear this comparison to elevator music is absolute blasphemy. Over the past few years, Vincent Fenton, a.k.a French Kiwi Juice, better known as FKJ, has garnered international attention quite deservingly by showcasing his virtuosic skill as a multi-instrumentalist, singer, producer, and DJ -- just watch the “Tadow” music video with Masego to see what I mean.
“We Ain’t Feeling TIme” comes off of his first full-length self-titled debut, and while it’s one of the lesser played tracks on the album, it does not lack in the any of the genius nor creativity that FKJ is known for. For four whole minutes (or, alternatively, the best elevator ride you’ve ever taken), he seizes your attention and guides it through a dreamy landscape of meditative lyrics, invigorating accents, and, of course, some of the smoothest sax you’ve ever heard. You can’t help but get lost. So don’t fight it.
