Producers have a unique ability to connect us to memories that often remain dormant. It’s unreal how specific sounds or samples can transport you into a place or time in your life. Artists like Perc bring you to the warehouse with industrial sounds echoing across his atmospheric techno tracks. Washed Out always transports me to the beach on a sunny afternoon, the lush layers of sound he produce lap against my ears like the waves in Half Moon Bay. And on "Breakfast Club", Z-trip, a disciple of the Boom Bap, evokes the feeling of a stoop in the Burroughs on a brisk Saturday morning.
The crisp hits of the hi-hats from the sample of Al Green's "I’m Glad You’re Mine" and Fresh Gordon’s "Gordie’s Groove" set the stage for this ode to youth. The beat is dynamic, creating a sense of excitement and familiarity perfectly accompanying the narrative stylings of his partnered MC.
Murs remains one of my favorite personalities in hip hop. Taking a similar comedic lyrical style, his narratives lead you along a bromance of nostalgia, friendship, and childhood. Any child of the 80s and early 90s can find themselves reminiscing about early morning replays of classic cartoons on cartoon network - personally I was awkwardly addicted to Johnny Quest and his questionable relationship with Haji.
