Some of the of the best nights out I’ve had have been the spontaneous, unplanned evenings hopping from event to event and letting the night take us where it does. There’s an excitement and a sense of mystery when you don’t know what new experience you might discover. Haitian-born (medical student) dance pioneer, Michael Brun, has so greatly embodied this feeling in his release of “How About This.”
From the onset the track hits you with what feels much like the pregame. Alarms sound, a deep house beat takes hold and the vocal stylings of New Jersey rapper Cherise Gary a.k.a. UNIIQU3 drive the beat forward in a way that builds the hype. Layered vocals repeat, “I don’t know about you, but how bout this, Ima’ shake that thing and move those hips” It’s a dirty, infectious verse that sticks with the listener well after the track has finished.
As we make our way through the track, the intrigue is dropped in through some added noir-flair elements from the production akin to what you would find abundantly in a ZHU or Malaa track.
There is a reason Michael Brun is beginning to see great success - it comes from a knack for making tracks that are simple enough to be accessible but complex enough to be original. He’s carved his niche through mixing house sounds with native Haitian styles such as kompa and rara. “How About This” features heavy rotations across many of my devices and it seems like a night out is no longer complete without it. I have no doubt that once you get your ears on this tune it will find a home on your playlists as well.
