The cuboctahedron is a polyhedron related to the cube and the octahedron, with 6 square and 8 triangular faces.
These ones of neodymium magnetic balls (5mm diameter) are made by connecting many little octahedron units along their edges. The 2 smaller constructions use rhombicuboctahedron units of 24 balls each, (they can also be seen as small octahedrons). 36 and 68 units were required for these 2 cuboctahedrons, giving magnet totals of 864 and 1632 balls respectively.
The 2 bigger versions are made with larger octahedron units of 8 × 6 = 48 balls each. 92 and 162 units respectively were required for building them with filled in square faces, giving magnet totals of 4416 and 7776 balls.
