Composed entirely of R60 mini spheres of 60 balls each (the R stands for Rhombicosidodecahedron), this quite large magnetic ball shape shows the relationship between the C60 fullerene or buckyball and the icosahedron. The buckyball of 60 outer mini spheres (decorated with squares of 4 yellow gold balls) is supported by a central core cluster of 12 mini spheres, and a further inner layer of 12 mini spheres of opposite polarity, indicated by the rose gold ring of 5 balls decoration. Adding 12 more spheres of the same polarity as the core spheres (each decorated with a ring of 5 yellow gold balls), 1 to each vertex, transforms the buckyball sphere of spheres into a core connected icosahedron of mini spheres. In the later part of the video I added 20 more spheres of the same polarity (decorated with triangles of 3 yellow gold balls) for an icosahedron of mini spheres with filled in triangular faces. The internally supported buckyball requires 12 + 12 + 60 = 84 R60 spheres for a total magnet count of 84 × 60 = 5040. The core connected hollow icosahedron adds 12 more R60 spheres, 96 × 60 = 5760, and the complete icosahedron with filled in faces adds 20 more R60 spheres, that is a grand total of 116 mini spheres made from 6960 neodymium magnetic balls.
The filled in icosahedron can also be built hollow without the internal core structure, which requires 92 mini spheres and a magnet count of 5520:
