This is my largest shape built to date, I just bought some new magnets and this uses all my new total except for a few spares.
Made from 240 small octahedrons each built of 36 balls, for a total of 8640 neodymium magnets.
It was fairly tricky to build as it wasn't very stable until most of the structure was in place. Once completed it is pretty stable and strong as you can see in the video.
Thanks and credit must go to Magnenaut for inventing his shape the Octahedral Icosahedron, that gave me the idea for this supersized version, that retains a frame but leaves each triangular face hollow. I've even made the video a little like the ones on his channel, check his out if you haven't already.
Geometrically it turns out that this shape is only an approximation of interconnected octahedrons, which don't really form perfect pentagonal rings but instead leave a small gap, which mostly disappears because of magnetic forces to still make a nice construction from neodymium magnetic balls.
Music was originally Equinoxe Pt. 2 by Jean-Michel Jarre, but has been audio swapped for copyright reasons to Chance, Luck, Errors in Nature, Fate, Destruction As a Finale by Chris Zabriskie, from the YouTube free music library.
