Time to see what's inside the final room...and sure enough, it's the fabled Masamune. Evidently the sword split itself into two entities, Masa & Mune, who guard the sword. A test then begins to see if we're worthy of wielding the blade.
Masa & Mune are basically Free Lancers, but with higher stats. Same desire to counter everything thrown at them too. Regular strikes do 45-50+ damage while the X Strike-esque counter does 85+ damage. Not exactly the bulkiest enemies alive though as the battle ends when one runs out of health.
The fight's not over yet though. The duo pull off their answer to Dragonball Z's fusion dance, becoming a giant ogre-esque beast and triggering a new boss theme reserved for serious business fights such as this one.
The fused Masa & Mune lose the ability to counter in exchange for stronger single target strikes that do around 70-80 damage. After a few rounds of attacks, it'll try to store up energy for an AoE blast. Can easily be canceled though with Crono's Slash.
Once enough damage has been done, it'll let out a roar. No damage besides hp slowly sapping away, but it does indicate a rather sizeable uptick in damage dealt to party members for the rest of the battle. The single target strikes now do 140-150 damage.
Not really a tricky fight, even when the damage the boss deals goes up. Just Mid Tonic anyone struck and eventually the boss will fall, especially when X gets to critical bonk the boss for 550+ damage on a crit and speed up the process significantly.
After the fight ends, the two guardians return to the sword, confident our team will find them a suitable owner. The sword does turn into a piece of a blade though as the guardians provide a free trip out of the mountain and back to the world map.
First order of business is to go check on that kid who was supposedly a hero. He's in his house due south of Fiona's Villa by the oceanside. Talk to him to find out he's been holding on to a medal dropped in the cafe by some frog dude. As it turns out, the kid wasn't the supposed hero, but rather the Frog we know who's on mopey mode infinity right now. The kid hands the medal to your team while he gets an earful from his father.
Return to the Cursed Woods and show the Hero Medal to Frog. He says he doesn't have any right to wield the Masamune which is apparently required if there's any chance to be had of defeating Magus, then walks away from a pot he was standing in front of.
Checking out that pot reveals something very interesting...another piece of the Masamune. This one has a name engraved on it, one we're quite familiar with by now...Melchior.
Cue a timeskip and we're back in 1000AD Medina Village to have a chat with Melchior. As it turns out, he was the sword's creator and could fix the sword...if he had some of the material the sword was made out of, Dreamstone. It hasn't been available for a very very long time though as the cutscene ends. You'd think this requires running around talking to a bunch of people for piecemeal clues on where to go now, but the answer's quite simple if you think about it. We'll be heading to the site of the answer next time.
First though...bonus clip! Sometimes in the Cursed Woods, you may see a blue monster of sorts wandering around the north. If you see this fellow, ram into the nearest available monster quickly. If you do, the blue monster known as a Nu will participate in the battle. It has quite the hp pool and only attacks with a move that knocks its target down to 1 hp. Could be rather deadly if the accompanying enemies get a chance to move afterwards.
The rewards for defeating a Nu are quite good. Decent chunk of xp, but more importantly 30 tech points, something that won't be eclipsed in a normal battle for quite awhile.
More next time!
