MATCHBOX 70e MB70 Ferrari 308 GTB custom
While best known as a road-going sports car, the Ferrari 308 GTB also forged an impressive competition career in rallying. Initially homologated into FIA Group 4, the lightweight fibreglass-bodied cars proved surprisingly competitive on tarmac events. As rally regulations evolved, the 308 continued into the Group B era before later being morphed into the GT/M for the canned 'Evolution' category of Group B. The Group 4 308 achieved Ferrari's greatest World Rally Championship result when Jean-Claude Andruet and co-driver Michèle "Biche" Petit drove their number 12 Ferrari 308 GTB to second place overall on the 1982 Tour de Corse, finishing behind only the factory Renault 5 Turbo.
This Matchbox 308 GTB was introduced in 1981 during Lesney's ownership prior to their bankruptcy. It was retained following the Universal Toys takeover and later repainted in a livery reflective of that of the Group 4 Charles Pozzi GTBs. There were a couple of other colour variations but it was deleted from the mainline by 1988.
At some point in its life, nearly every visible surface had been covered with black marker pen. The body, windows and details were heavily affected, leaving the model looking far removed from its original appearance. In this restoration and customisation project, I remove the marker damage, restore the previously blacked-out windows, completely repaint the body and replace the wheels with a set appropriate for the casting. The finished model is transformed into a fairly accurate replica of Andruet's number 12 308 from the 1982 Tour de Corse.
