Customising a Corgi Juniors No. 51-A Porsche 917, in the range from 1971 until 1973.
The Porsche 917 was one of the earliest models developed for the new Corgi Juniors line, and what a job they did with it in my opinion. The first version had a gold painted body with a red metal base like mine. This got me thinking. I wondered if the inspiration for this colour scheme was the Porsche 917K of David Piper from the 1970 24 Hours of Le Mans which had a yellow body with red accents on its lower extremities. There was only one way this custom was going to go.
The Porsche 917 was developed in 1969, but it proved to be highly unstable. After Porsche recruited John Wyer Automotive to run the factory team for 1970, drastic changes were made to the bodywork to create the short-tail kurzheck or K version of the 917. Porsche were a force to be reckoned with that year. They won the World Sportscar Championship and one of the 917's of Porsche's Salzburg outfit would win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Unfortunately, chassis damage would mean the number 18 car I'm recreating would retire after 11 hours of racing.
