Customising a Matchbox MB166 Ford Supervan II, in the Matchbox range from 1986 until 1992.

Prompted by viewer Márcio generously sending me a set of Ford Supervan II decals, I made it a priority to get hold of one of these castings which I noticed have lately commanded a higher price than some other contemporary castings. The Supervan was in the Matchbox mainline for four years between 1986 and 1989 with all but the final year in the Ford Motorsport livery replicating the real Ford Supervan. This 'Starfire' van was the 1989 entry. There were plenty of other designs on offer through until 1992 for various promotions and multipacks.
The casting recreates the 1984 Ford Supervan II which in turn followed the original 1971 Supervan. While that had a modified steel body dropped onto a Ford GT40 chassis, the II took a more considered approach. It had a Mark 2 Trasit fibreglass body mould attached to a Ford C100 Group C sports car chassis. It was showcased as a promotional vehicle for Ford, but it had a very short life indeed. The second generation launched in 1986 which was vastly different to the first generation model. Sadly, the van was cannibalised in 1994 into the Supervan 3. Ford unveiled the all electric Supervan 4 in 2022.
Márcio gave me a choice of decals but I chose his recreation of the real van. I improved on the casting by picking out some details such as those on the plastic grille piece, tailights, and door handles, while fitting it with some new wheels reminiscent of the original.
