In this Subnautica 2 lore video, I read through and break down the scan data for the BFJ Jelly, one of the strangest large creatures currently found in the game.
At first glance, the BFJ Jelly looks like a giant sun-basking jellyfish covered in eyes. It floats through the water with long limbs and a strange soft body, making it easy to assume it is just another large passive jelly creature. But the scan data makes it clear that the BFJ Jelly is much more complex than it looks.
Despite its jellyfish-like appearance, the BFJ Jelly has complex organs, eyes, and muscles that allow it to control its limbs and move through the water. It does not appear to be a simple drifting blob. It is an advanced alien animal with a body plan that only looks like a jellyfish from the outside.
Even stranger, the BFJ Jelly does not seem to hunt normal prey. Instead, it appears to search for methane sources on the ocean floor. This makes it feel very different from ordinary predators or filter feeders. It may be part of a larger methane-based food chain, feeding off chemical energy sources rather than chasing fish.
The biggest lore hook is that the BFJ Jelly may eventually morph into some kind of flying creature. We do not know exactly what that adult form is yet, but there is apparently a version listed in the game files that appears to be a land-based variant. That is a huge clue, because if this creature has a land-based or flying adult form, Subnautica 2 may eventually need a proper island, floating land mass, or some kind of above-water biome where that version can exist.
This also ties into the flying Hycean creatures already seen around the starting area. The adult or flying version of the BFJ Jelly could end up being similar to those blimp-like animals, floating or flying through the air above Protea instead of staying underwater forever.
If that is true, the BFJ Jelly may not just be a weird background creature. It could be an early stage of a much larger life cycle that connects the ocean, methane-rich seafloor, and future land or sky environments. That would make it one of the more important creatures to watch as Subnautica 2 expands through future Early Access updates.
