In this Subnautica 2 video, I take a closer look at the origins of the Tadpole submarine design by going back to the Crafting the Tadpole developer vlog, where the developers explained some of the design choices behind Subnautica 2’s main early vehicle.
The main focus of this video is not just the finished Tadpole submarine, but the early concept sketches shown during the dev vlog. These sketches are interesting because they appear to show early ideas that look very similar to what later became, or may become, the Sea Frog chassis upgrade for the Tadpole. Since the Sea Frog is connected to the Tadpole chassis system and has been seen in unfinished content, these old sketches may give us a better idea of how long that concept has been part of the design pipeline.
I also talk about another very interesting concept shown in the Tadpole design sketches: a version of the vehicle with four claw-like legs. This design looks like it could potentially walk on land or crawl across surfaces, which opens up some big questions about where Subnautica 2 could be going in future updates.
If the developers were exploring a walking Tadpole-style chassis, that could support the idea that Subnautica 2 may eventually include some kind of island, landmass, or above-water exploration zone. That does not necessarily mean a normal island like in the first Subnautica. It could be something stranger, especially with the giant World Tree visible in the distance.
The World Tree has massive cupped fronds growing out from it, and it is possible those structures could function as the “land” areas in Subnautica 2. Instead of a normal beach or island, the future land gameplay could happen on the huge organic platforms growing from the World Tree itself.
This video breaks down the Tadpole submarine design origins, the early developer sketches, the possible Sea Frog chassis connection, the four-legged walking chassis concept, and what those designs might suggest about future vehicle upgrades, land exploration, island gameplay, and the giant World Tree in Subnautica 2.
None of this is confirmed final gameplay, but the concept art gives us some very interesting clues. The Tadpole may not just be a small starter submarine. It may be the foundation for a much bigger vehicle upgrade system, including aquatic chassis types, walking chassis designs, and specialized exploration tools for future areas.
If you are interested in Subnautica 2 theories, Tadpole submarine design, Sea Frog chassis leaks, unfinished vehicle content, developer vlog breakdowns, concept art, walking vehicle designs, land exploration theories, island theories, or the World Tree, this video goes through the biggest clues.
Thanks for watching.
