We're starting to figure out how the Scorpius Trenches expansion is actually supposed to PLAY in Subnautica 2, and some of the hidden mechanics inside the Experimental Build reveal a surprisingly interconnected progression system involving the SeaFrog Chassis, Resource Grinder, Axum technology, and the massive Trident submarine.

In this video I'm digging through unfinished developer content to demonstrate several mechanics that normally aren't available during regular gameplay yet.
First, we're looking at one of the SeaFrog's most important jobs.
Scattered around the upcoming Scorpius Trenches are massive chunks of resources that are too large for the player to simply pick up.
That's where the SeaFrog comes in.
Using the gravity manipulation system built into its arm, you can:
Grab giant resource chunks
↓
Carry them through the environment
↓
Drop them into the Resource Grinder
↓
Break them down into usable materials
Some of these processed resources can provide materials such as Unstable Acid, suggesting that resource gathering in Scorpius will involve much more environmental interaction than simply swimming over and grabbing minerals off the ground.
But the much bigger discovery involves the:
TRIDENT SUBMARINE
The hidden development content appears to lay out part of the intended storyline surrounding how players eventually get the Trident operational.
The submarine's reactor appears to be damaged and missing a critical power core / sphere.
And replacing it isn't as simple as fabricating another battery.
Instead, you're apparently going to need to explore Axum ruins and track down a highly radioactive alien power core hidden inside some kind of alien nest or heavily obstructed structure.
The entrances are blocked by enormous pieces of debris.
Which gives the SeaFrog another obvious purpose.
Use its gravity manipulation arm to:
✅ Pull away heavy wreckage
✅ Clear blocked entrances
✅ Physically dismantle the obstruction
✅ Reach the alien structure hidden inside
Once you've cleared a route into the nest, you can find a strange glowing:
AXUM POWER CORE
The unfinished reactor setup then gives us another major clue.
A successfully repaired dummy version of the Trident reactor appears to combine:
Human / Alterra engineering
with
Axum alien technology
into a single functioning system.
That could mean repairing the Trident isn't simply about finding replacement human components.
We may actually need to explore more Axum ruins, understand their technology, and eventually learn how to build an entirely new form of:
HUMAN + AXUM HYBRID TECHNOLOGY
before the Trident can be restored.
The development version of the repaired reactor even contains what appears to be a successful activation animation, strongly suggesting that some version of this progression is being actively prototyped.
And then there's the enormous structure currently referred to as the:
AXUM HARP
This strange alien facility appears to have some connection to the area containing the radioactive power core.
There's an interactive ON/OFF control on the roof, but in the current unfinished build it doesn't appear to produce any obvious effect.
My current theory is that the Axum Harp may eventually be part of whatever process allows us to safely retrieve, expose, or otherwise access the alien power core inside the nest.
But that part is still extremely unfinished, so its exact purpose remains unclear.

It's that we're starting to see how the developers are connecting the SeaFrog, new resources, Axum technology, and the Trident together into one larger progression system.
