...So here's a little known percussion fire lighting technique called the bamboo strike a light. It works in a similar way to flint & steel in that your bashing a sharp piece of rock against a substance that produces sparks but in this case the bamboo replaces the steel. This only works with certain species of bamboo in the schizostachyum genus with a rough exterior & longer than usual spaces between the internodes.

...Yes you heard me the bamboo casts sparks when struck with a sharp glassy rock or broken porcelain. How ?...... Well that's the curious thing. Apparently the high silica content on the outside of the bamboo ignites & casts tiny sparks when struck with a sharp edge but is silica combustible ??

...I've seen similar sparks from bashing two pieces of quartz together (which also has a high silica content) & this is a process called triboluminesence. I won't even attempt to explain this (you can Google it) but the top & bottom is that this is supposedly cool light that doesn't have any flammable properties.

...So WTF's going on here ? There's no metal involved only the silica on the bamboo yet it ignites charred material. If anyone's got any scientific explanation on what's actually taking place here then please let us know or if you know any scientists that could explain what's happening that would be great too
