OK. Oddity post tonight. Zenith Allegro 2000 speakers found in a Chicago alley — they sound great!!! Laughs and criticism are encouraged and appreciated. This post was not supposed to be serious — but it is! Paired tonight with a freshly re-biased Yamaha RX-530 from 1989 at 50WPC.
My wife found these in the alley near her parents house in Chicago last weekend. Zenith Allegro 2000 speakers from the mid-70s, rated at 40WPC, featuring an 8” Foster woofer and 3 1/2” horn tweeter. My son and I blow things like this up and these were for graveyard fun. I’ve seen these at Goodwill and other places over the years — but never as a pair together — and I’d never purchase at any cost.
I’ve always wanted to hear how they sound, given that I’ve seen them from time to time.
Hooked them up prior to blowing up and they sound amazing for their size and quality. Seriously. These are not bad. Are they accurate? Are they audiophile? Are they better than others? Probably not. But they are good enough to keep in the collection and are rocking the basement tonight.
That said, these are not high-end by any means. Front grills are not removable. People sometimes rip out the drivers and tweeters for other purposes. Mixed reviews from them but the fact that there is a following and the abundance of chatter shows that these have a place in the lexicon of vintage audio.
There also is an Allegro 1000 and 3000 model. The 2000 here has a brilliance switch.
So, next time you see a pair for $5, give them a shot for fun! You might not be disappointed.
