I continue to give my sons guidance about older technology. Treat it carefully, be gentle, and be respectable, as you would to your elders (like, me!!)
I don’t use any of my receivers full time, and that’s my choice and likely not popular opinion.
After all, why own that unobtanium piece, or the one you paid a lot of $$ which you’ve always wanted, or maybe you’re re-buying you childhood/college/bachelor system. There’s no right or wrong answer but I’m a collector and preservationist so nothing gets used daily or in heavy rotation.
Just like this 80s Akai line here, I’m afraid to make this a daily driver. Here’s the AA-R32, early 80s, 45WPC with dual STK amp chips plus a STK preamp that gets very hot and is not heatsinked. After a 15 minute low level play, it’s been cranked up now and it’s working great.
Few of these seem to working right. The STK chips blow more than they do in Technics equipment from the same era.
But it’s such a cool display and sounds great. So, I’m careful with it and will only use it occasionally. And while my oldest at age 13 asks to see this Akai more often, I refrain.
Tonight it’s powering a pair of period corrrect inaccurately tuned pressboard Technics speakers with printed vinyl wood covering. And it sounds so great - at least to my ears - and thats what matters to me.
Anyways, I do too much storytelling and love assembling posts like this. Hope you enjoy.
