Woman ‘scammed out of £200 by fake Kevin Costner’ on Facebook

On Facebook, a woman claimed to have been duped by con artists posing as Hollywood actor Kevin Costner.

Eileen Leeks, 63, claimed that after joining a group honoring the Yellowstone star, things on the social media platform took an unsettling turn.

She got a message saying she would get to see the 69-year-old actor, of whom she is a huge fan, if she bought Apple coupons.

Ms. Leeks said on BBC Radio Suffolk that she "caved in" after being "nagged."

She later claimed that the con artists had shamelessly demanded more money from her, claiming that she had been duped by someone else and that in order to see the actor, she had to pay £1,000 for a VIP membership card.

"After giving in to pressure that I wouldn't be able to meet him unless I had the Apple cards, I bought two at £100 each," she added.

After that, I received a message claiming that I had been duped and that I would need to spend more than £1k on a VIP membership card in order to meet Mr. Costner in person.

"You're kidding, he's a millionaire," I thought to myself.

She claimed that she received a video call from someone posing as the star himself during the following phase of the scam.

Ms. Leeks, an unemployed resident of Felixstowe, Suffolk, stated: "I thought it was really him because his face was moving." He was moving while seated on a chair in his office.

"This is Kevin Costner, and you have been duped," he declared.

"Then, his'management team' grabbed hold of me and told me that people were using his voice and face to con people and it wasn't him."

Even after Ms. Leeks reported the scam—it's unclear if she reported it to Facebook or Mr. Costner's team—the con artists continued to harass her.

They got in touch with her once more and made her an opportunity to work and live in the US.

"I don't believe this, what in the world is going on?" the woman remarked.

"Fans will lose a great deal of money if they travel all the way to America in the hopes of finding employment and an apartment.

"I am not happy because I lost a lot of money and I am unemployed."

A Facebook official has been contacted by The Independent to request comment.
