Winds of Change | WLNS-TV Lansing, Michigan | April 1996:
A flood of local television severe weather specials crested in the Spring of 1996 across much of the Midwestern United States.
WLNS-TV in Lansing, Michigan produced and broadcast 'Winds of Change' in late April 1996 during the annual statewide severe weather awareness week and on the heels of a May premiere of 'Twister', also prominently featured. It follows the standard local television production "formula" for severe weather specials, then and still now to an extent. Most interesting at the time was the nationwide National Weather Service modernization that transpired in the mid-1990's. A quick tour of the then new Grand Rapids, Michigan forecast office is included, along with interviews from forecasters at the time, intermixed with affiliate stock tornado video, survivor stories and assorted safety tips.
