Questions about eternity and “end times” matter. What people believe about the future shapes how they live now, and many objections to Christianity can be addressed by a biblical view of eternity.
Will Hess’s video on the atheist objection from animal suffering was REALLY GOOD — but are there areas where even Will and I disagree?
He rejects the idea that animals “don’t have souls,” noting the Hebrew nefesh is applied to animals as well as humans.
Hess frames animal pain as a major evidential problem for theism and critiques standard theodicies like free will and soul-making as insufficient for animals.
He proposes that a good God must ultimately defeat animal suffering by giving animals a future through resurrection, New Creation, and possible transformation, citing biblical themes such as God’s covenant with living creatures, Romans 8, and “all things” being renewed.
I love Will’s work, and I love anytime somebody whose thinking I respect comes into contact with my realm of expertise.
