The word "soul" first appears in the Bible describing fish. Not humans. Fish.

In Genesis 1:20, God says "Let the waters teem with living creatures." That word — creatures — is nefesh in Hebrew. It's the same word we translate as "soul" everywhere else in Scripture.

So here's what that means. Whatever "soul" means in the biblical framework, God gave it to animals before He ever gave it to humans.

And when Genesis 2 describes the creation of Adam, it says God formed him from the dust, breathed His spirit into him, and Adam became a living nefesh. A living soul. Body plus the breath of God equals a living soul.

And that same breath of life? Scripture says God gave it to animals too.

So where does the idea that "animals don't have souls" come from? It comes from Plato. From Greek philosophy. Not from the Bible. The Bible never draws that line.

And if animals are nefesh — living souls sustained by God's own breath — then their lives matter to Him. Their suffering matters to Him. And their future matters to Him.
