A short and upbeat wintry piece, quite a different feel to most of my work!
December 1st, 2017 was the most productive day of my life so far. In about 15 hours, I wrote not one, but two pieces of music. The Joy of Winter is the first of these (and the better of the two, tbh).
That was the day that the fifth Joy of Mapping session in the Doom community kicked off. As always, there were four episodes with distinctive themes, and I thought it'd be neat to have a go at writing a MIDI for each of them and then they could be used in maps if anyone wanted them. Since episode 1 had a snow theme, and I hadn't done my annual winter-themed piece for 2017, I took on that one first.
I'm really proud of The Joy of Winter, it's another one of my favourites, but overall the whole JoM undertaking was a bit of a disaster for me. It took me 11 hours to write this piece, and in retrospect it's clear that all my energy went into it. The next four hours went into writing The Sea of Mystery for episode 3's underwater episode, and it's a sad fact that 2017 - my strongest year - went out with a very weak piece. The next day I was watching DobuGM streaming his mapping for the fourth episode (sky theme) and since I was still aiming to do one MIDI per episode, he requested the episode 4 MIDI for his map...
But I had completely burnt out and failed to do anything for the other two episodes, and in the end, no one used the two MIDIs I had already made. Welp!
I'm really proud of this remake too, I feel like I tend to mix the bass too loudly and then not have enough treble but I've managed to get it more evened out this time, hopefully I can keep doing this consistently in future! I also wasn't expecting to get the keyboard solo almost identical to the original, that first run was very tricky!
