Hey everyone!
In February 2017, the Rebirth MIDI Pack project started up - the third of Doomworld's community MIDI packs after the success of the packs for Plutonia in 2013 and Revolution! in 2016. Cave Dwellers was the first piece I wrote for it, targeting MAP14, and was later followed by another 5 pieces, 2 of which have never seen the light of YouTube day as they were written after the split from the old channel. As I write this, the Rebirth MIDI Pack is one track away from completion.
I find Cave Dwellers and Mystified in particular are very strange compared to the rest of my work, I took on something of a more experimental approach to those two, while the other pieces (with the exception of A Warrior Reborn) preserve the darker tone but play things a bit more safely.
This wasn't so difficult to remake, the rhythmic oddities were something I expected to struggle with recording (quintuplets + guitar = ??) but to my surprise everything went pretty smoothly here. My excuse for it being another large gap between uploads this time is that yes - I can progress a lot quicker now that The Final Judgement is out of the way, but actually when I released that, I skipped ahead to remake The Infinite Labyrinth instead. That only took about a week, and has been sitting in a 99% finished state for about a month now, more or less ready to release after Mystified is up. Speaking of Mystified, that's also very far along, I began sequencing it when I only had the bass still to record here - but hadn't gotten around to restringing at that point. While all this has been going on, I also finished a new 10-minute composition for Elementalism, and have been working on university pieces too.
So, yeah, kinda busy.
One thing that's different about this video is that you'll notice the Doom level this was written for (Rebirth MAP14) serves as the backgrounds. I've been wanting to do stuff like this for a while, the idea came to me a while ago when I first thought about the video for The Village that Time Forgot - it makes more sense to feature the things these pieces were written for. Plus I've found background images have been increasingly hard to gather in the last year or so, often taking me hours for one video, and I'm also becoming less and less comfortable around copyright uncertainty surrounding them. I find that when I watch these videos back, my eyes are drawn more to the instruments, so I hope this isn't too jarring of a change?
