Thanatos was the third piece I wrote for the Rebirth MIDI Pack, back in May 2017. Although it's quite a long piece - targeting MAP29, one of the largest maps in Rebirth - I had a clear idea on what I wanted to do with it so it only took about three days to write.
More recently, it appeared on MAP20 of Dragonfly's hugely popular megawad "Eviternity," which I also contributed a map to and a bespoke piece of music which will eventually make its way here. More recently, it appeared on MAP20 of Dragonfly's hugely popular megawad "Eviternity," which I also contributed a map to and a bespoke piece of music which will eventually make its way here. Since Eviternity was released before the Rebirth MIDI Pack - which is 1 track away from being done as of this writing - I figured it was best to show both Rebirth MAP29 and Eviternity MAP20 in this video, which is also handy for providing me with enough backdrops to use.
The original upload of this was the first of the "final four," following the death of a laptop and loss of the soundfonts I was using at the time. Knowing I'd be upgrading software imminently anyway I didn't bother gathering them all again and so the last four were uploaded with the standard Windows General MIDI sounds, that means there's no more soundfont renditions to compare these remakes to!
A bit of a nuisance of a piece to remake really - the drum track is busier than normal and so that took a couple of evenings by itself, and my habit of writing uneven arpeggios (I have no idea how to describe this well) meant I had to put a lot of time into memorising some of the keyboard parts.
On balance though I really enjoyed revisiting the middle section, and I tried out a slightly driven bass tone this time to make it sound a bit heavier. The synth solo finally sounds like how I imagined it - I was never particularly fond of the polysynth in the original MIDI but I couldn't really get anything closer. I also added a Hammond organ to the middle sections, it blends nicely with the rockier sound of those riffs, and it's consistent with other Rebirth pieces since Mystified, A Warrior Reborn, and Shadows also use these.
Thanks everyone for listening! The milestone gets ever closer, and keeping these spaced out to two weeks is allowing me to get quite far ahead of the uploads. Indecision is finished and A Warrior Reborn is fairly far along. TVtTF next month, it's happening!!!
