Here's the first one from 2014. Vengeance... where to begin on talking about this one?
Before I set out to remake all of my work, there were some tracks I was really looking forward to (and I still am!), and some I was less enthusiastic about. No other track fell into that latter category as much as Vengeance. I considered this to be one of my weakest compositions ever, and considered not bothering at all, but I did kinda promise to replace everything from the old channel.
Now I realise that Vengeance never got a fair chance in its MIDI form. In the later stages of making this version, I honestly found myself surprised as it actually was beginning to sound somewhat decent!
Vengeance never really knew what it was doing originally, it went from slow catchy rock, to a heavy section that was trying too hard, to some slap bass stuff, then a piano comes in then suddenly it's really fast with guitars and synths and back to the rock again.
First decision I made was to scrap the heavy part completely. It sucked, I could hardly bear to listen to it. That in itself just seems to have done wonders for the song, although that now brings it under 3 minutes, shorter than any singular original piece I released before.
Having the slap bass replaced by a normal sounding one (purely because slap bass is quite inadequate when I try playing it) also helped in making things sound a bit more cohesive.
Unfortunately, we're still in sequenced guitar territory. You can tell from the melody at the beginning I'm still pretty mediocre with guitars, and I spent about four days practicing the fast solo at slower speeds. If you set the video speed to 0.75, that's as fast as I could go, and with no sign of getting closer to full speed any time soon, I surrendered, sorry! I hope the keyboard solo that follows makes up for it :)
All that time practicing THAT solo and I forgot there was another one of sorts at the end. The guitars were the last thing to be recorded (literally the night before this upload), and at this point I honestly just couldn't be bothered with them anymore. I had an idea to reuse the piano part from the middle for the ending of the song instead, and it fitted as perfectly as I could have hoped for.
So ultimately, there have been a few more changes here than I'd normally be comfortable making, but on this occasion I think it's done Vengeance a lot of good. Better than that horrible compressed recording I had before, no doubt.
