Longitudinal or end-on launching relies heavily on gravity to slide a massive ship backward into the water down a shallow slipway slope. To initiate motion, engineers construct a complex timber or steel cradle system that supports the hull, resting on sliding ways greased with mineral oil or specialized lime soap.

The success of the launch depends on keeping the friction coefficient strictly between 0.015 and 0.03 so that the gravitational force pulling the ship down exceeds frictional resistance. If the pressure is poorly calculated, the grease can be squeezed out entirely, causing the massive hull to stall mid-launch or suffer severe structural cracks.
