Longitudinal or end-on launching relies heavily on gravity to slide a massive ship backward into the water down a shallow slipway slope. The success of the launch depends on keeping the friction coefficient strictly between 0.015 and 0.03 so that the gravitational force pulling the ship down exceeds frictional resistance. If the pressure is poorly calculated, the grease can be squeezed out entirely, causing the massive hull to stall mid-launch or suffer severe structural cracks.
