Naval architects employ specialized structural modifications, such as bulbous bows, to actively reduce the immense drag caused by bow wave patterns. Positioned below the waterline, the bulb generates a secondary wave system designed to destructively interfere with and cancel out the primary bow wave, drastically dampening overall fluid resistance.

Additionally, refining hull geometry with sharp entry angles and long, slender lines allows ships to displace water far more gradually. These hydrodynamic refinements enable specialized vessels, such as high-speed passenger ferries, to bypass conventional hull speed barriers and achieve velocities nearly double their standard displacement limits without requiring excessive engine power.
