The conceptual breakthrough of modern air-cushion vehicles dates back to the 1950s when British engineer Christopher Cockerell performed fundamental fluid dynamics tests using a simple vacuum cleaner motor, a cat food tin, and kitchen scales. His experiments proved that directing a high-velocity stream of air downward through a peripheral jet ring could efficiently trap a pressurized cushion, multiplying total lift force.
This laboratory proof-of-concept quickly led to the construction of the SRN1, the world's first full-scale operational hovercraft. On July 25, 1959, the SRN1 successfully traversed the English Channel, convincing global military and transport sectors to rapidly deploy these craft for amphibious beach landings, commercial passenger ferry networks, and emergency flood rescues.
