A floating crane sits on a huge flat-bottomed pontoon that displaces enough water to support the crane, its load, and all equipment on board. But buoyancy alone is not enough when it is lifting thousands of tons.
The pontoon is also extremely wide relative to its depth. That width increases metacentric height, giving the platform strong resistance to rolling and making it much harder to tip than a narrow vessel.
