A ship’s radar visibility depends on five main factors: shape, aspect, texture, material, and size. Deck containers, balconies, curves, and certain hull angles can all return radar pulses toward the sender.

Rough and metallic surfaces tend to reflect radar more effectively, while smoother surfaces direct energy in fewer directions. Larger objects also generally produce a stronger radar return than smaller ones.
