Hydrofoils use underwater wings attached to the hull by struts. As water flows over a foil, the foil pushes it downward and the water pushes the foil upward.

As speed increases, lift eventually exceeds the boat’s weight and raises the hull completely clear of the surface. With only the foils and struts in the water, hull drag is dramatically reduced.
