Standard Marine Communication Phrases are designed to remove ambiguity from conversations at sea. Words such as “may,” “might,” “could,” and “should” can mean different things to different people, especially when English is not everyone’s first language.

Instead, messages are structured with clear labels and direct wording. Saying “Advice: take the deep-water route” tells the receiving vessel exactly what kind of message it is and greatly reduces the risk of misunderstanding.
